The greatest concern that plagues any nation today is the issue of Global warming. Pollution has led to environmental degradation causing widespread climatic changes and also resulting in various health hazards. It is not only the various governments of the different countries but also the business houses and the companies who are spending time and money to bring about radical changes in development of sustainable, renewable and alternative sources of energy. It is here, that the power generated from wind energy has emerged as one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies. Wind power energy is one of the most viable options amongst the various renewable energy technologies today.

Wind energy technologies have matured over the years and the usages of wind turbines for power generation have gained momentum. The latest are the vertical axis wind turbines that need to be pointed towards the direction of the wind in the homes that will result in generating the cleanest energy. The kinetic energy of the wind is transformed into mechanical energy by these specially designed wind turbines. Most wind turbines have start up speed of 8 MPH but it requires a minimum average speed of 12 MPH. The height at which the wind turbines work best is approximately 100 feet. Another important thing is it requires half an acre of land to make it efficient without many obstructions. There exist three types of wind turbines especially designed for the residential owners.

Wind power generators are again one of the most reliable sources of green power on the planet. The concept of wind farms is also gaining in popularity. Wind farms install many turbines, scattered over a larger area thereby harnessing the wind energy to its maximum capacity. It is said that the largest wind farm is in Texas known as the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center has about 421 wind turbines that can generate electricity to power approximately 230,000 homes per year.

In recent times, there are companies that are specializing in providing information on wind "resources" around the world. This is before erecting any wind turbine, the area should be properly chosen, and the companies in this respect can provide data on wind that is blowing 80 m high over an area of 15 km for a year. This detailed information in turn would open up vast areas for the development of this renewable and clean source of energy.

To leap forward over fossil fuels, it is imperative that we spend more time and research on developing this most economical renewable source of energy.
